The Leaving Certificate Examination sits at level 4 and 5 of the NFQ and is the final examination in the Irish secondary school system. The curriculum takes a minimum of two years to cover, yet some students might opt in for an additional ‘Transition Year’. This means the final exam for most students will take place two – three years after the Junior Certificate Examination. When it comes to "The Senior Cycle”, as it’s mostly referred to, most students taking the examination are between 16–20 years of age. The examination is overseen by the State Examinations Commission.
