Further Explorations in Classical Music: Level 2

Course Description:

This course has been specially designed for participants who have completed the listening-based music course ‘A Journey Through Classical Music’ and now wish to further develop their music knowledge beyond the broad overview of level 1. It is also suitable for those with extant experience of classical music history and styles and who wish to additionally enrich their music appreciation with an understanding of the fundamentals of music theory and score reading.

The first seminars will begin by developing an understanding of the rudiments of music theory in a clear and accessible way. These fundamentals and in-class activities will support learning how to follow and explore musical notation and enhance understanding of musical elements such as melody, harmony, and rhythm in more detail.

Building on this, we will study a selection of composers and short masterworks from various eras. Participants will use their newfound theoretical knowledge to deepen and enrich their understanding and exploration of musical styles and forms. As ever, this relaxed and interactive course will also delve into the historical and artistic contexts of each composer and their works, and consider interesting questions along the way through reading, discussion, and some in-class written work and activities.

Topics we will explore include the rudiments of music notation, Pitch, Rhythm, Harmony, and Form; in addition to a closer look at instruments and studying masterworks from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras. I look forward to welcoming you!
