Course Content

This micro-credential is relevant to health and social care professionals working with older adults. Relevant professionals include doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and all allied health and social care professionals working either in healthcare or community settings who are interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of frailty in ageing adults through the latest evidence-based research and practices.

This micro-credential will review the concept of frailty and the multiple methods available to identify it, emphasising understanding the different geriatric dimensions they address and the advantages and disadvantages of every method in different settings. It will also cover Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and the management of common geriatric syndromes to help achieve a more gerontologically and frailty-attuned healthcare workforce.

How will this Micro-credential be delivered?

  • This micro-credential is delivered fully online. Learners will take part in ten x 2-hour online lectures on Tuesdays (3-5 pm) Irish Standard Time.
  • Further online resources will be available to students to facilitate additional self-directed study.

On successful completion of this micro-credential, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the concept and recognise the biological underpinnings of frailty in ageing adults.
  • Differentiate the various methods for identifying frailty in ageing adults.
  • Gain confidence in assessing and applying frailty assessment tools for specific contexts and purposes. Identify the relevance and importance of assessing frailty in healthcare settings.
  • Outline the principles of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in the management of frailty and geriatric syndromes.
  • Describe the application of CGA for the management of frailty in speciality scenarios (e.g. surgery, oncology) and in special patient groups (e.g. HIV, intellectual disabilities)

HCI Pillar 3 Learner Fee Subsidy: Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria may qualify for a 50% fee subsidy, subject to the availability of subsidized places. Fee subsidy for eligible Non-EU learners may vary.
