Mixed Media Art Workshop

Course Description:

Day 1: Introduction to Mixed Media

  • Learn what "mixed media" means: combining different materials and  techniques (paper, paint, fabric, found objects, etc.).
  • View example artworks across styles (abstract, narrative, whimsical). Discuss creative freedom and play in the mixed media process. Begin warm-up explorations with mark-making and simple materials.

Day 2: Collage Layering

  • Use magazine clippings, old book pages, fabric scraps, and found objects. Explore composition basics: balance, contrast, and texture. Include personal ephemera (tickets, letters) to encourage storytelling.

Day 3: Acrylic Paint + Texture

  • Learn how to build texture using acrylic paint.
  • Mix with modeling paste, sand, or gesso for added surface interest. Apply with palette knives, old credit cards, or scraping tools.

Day 4: Ink & Markers

  • Experiment with alcohol inks to create fluid, vibrant backgrounds. Add detail and layering with Posca markers or other paint pens. Combine bold color with intricate linework or doodles.

Day 5: Stenciling & Stamping

  • Use pre-cut and handmade stencils (from acetate or cardstock).
  • Experiment with foam stamps, rubber stamps, and found objects (bubble  wrap, bottle caps).
  • Layer patterns using sponges, spray inks, or brayers.

Day 6: Fabric & Stitching

  • Introduce embroidery and hand stitching on paper or canvas. Sew or glue on fabric scraps, buttons, threads, and ribbons. Create tactile surfaces and explore texture through thread.

Day 7: Natural Elements

  • Incorporate organic materials such as leaves, twigs, and dried flowers. Explore tea or coffee staining for aged, vintage effects.
  • Try eco-printing or nature rubbings for added visual interest.

Day 8: Found Objects & Assemblage

  • Work with dimensional items: bottle caps, keys, beads, string, etc. Explore assemblage and altered art (books, boxes, panels). Use glue guns or strong adhesives to create sturdy 3D structures.

Day 9: Mixed Media Project – Part 1

  • Begin creating a final mixed media piece using multiple techniques learned throughout the workshop.
  • Plan composition and start background layers: collage, paint, fabric, etc. Encourage storytelling, personal symbolism, and creative risk-taking.

Day 10: Mixed Media Project – Part 2

  • Continue layering and refining the final artwork.
  • Add details: stitching, found objects, stamping, text, etc.
  • End with a group reflection or informal show-and-tell.
