The programme philosophy stems from the beliefs that ageing is a positive life event and that older people benefit when communities and older people services are designed to be age-friendly. Older people are affected in many ways by how and where they live. Their ability to participate in the social, economic and cultural life of a community or residential care setting and their physical and psychological health and well being are determined by the environment in which they live.
The programme aims, through eclectic teaching and learning methods and work-based learning, to develop and enhance the students knowledge and skills in working with older people. Specifically, the programme aims to develop reflective, knowledgeable and critically thinking professionals who will use a person-centered approach to practice and act as positive change agents in older person care in community and residential care settings. The focus on a practice innovation project as the research project for the Masters Programme affords the opportunity for the student to identify a real issue in their work environment and using the skills obtained in the Programme to develop an innovation with the potential to elicit change.
