Atlantic Technological University (ATU Sligo) is now offering a targeted upskilling pathway for industry professionals with its one-year online Certificate in Automation and Electronics. This programme is specifically designed to bridge the gap for holders of craft qualifications and individuals with substantial relevant work experience, providing a direct route to a Level 7 degree.
The programme serves a dual purpose: it results in a valuable minor award at Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications, while also acting as a qualifying year for progression to the online BEng in Electronic Engineering. Upon successful completion, graduates are fully prepared to enter the Level 7 degree programme, which can be completed with just two additional years of part-time online study.
The curriculum provides a solid foundation in core electronic principles essential for modern automation roles. Key modules include Instrumentation, which covers electronic circuit theory, sensor technologies, and their practical applications. Learners will develop the skills to analyse and test low voltage direct current electrical circuits, with topics spanning Ohm’s Law, Kirchoff’s Laws, voltage, capacitance, and semiconductors. The course also focuses on the sensing of critical parameters like temperature, pressure, light, and distance for system monitoring and control.
This programme is an ideal opportunity for electricians, technicians, and those in manufacturing roles to formally validate their experience and accelerate their career into the fields of electronic engineering and automation.
