A new initiative has been launched to support young people in Youth Diversion Projects (YDPs) as they explore opportunities in further education and training (FET). The guidance document was introduced today by Minister of State at the Department of Justice James Browne and Minister for Skills and Further Education Niall Collins.

The comprehensive guide is designed to connect at-risk youth with a range of educational pathways including:

  • Apprenticeships and traineeships

  • Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses

  • Adult and community education programmes

  • Core literacy and numeracy supports

  • Access routes into higher education, such as the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) scheme

This new resource provides details for Education & Training Boards (ETBs) nationwide and includes contact information for Adult Guidance Information Services, making it easier for Youth Justice workers and support services to match individuals with tailored learning options.

“Providing pathways back into education and training is an essential part of our Youth Justice response,” said Minister Browne. “This guide will help open doors for young people who may have disengaged from school, offering real opportunities to turn their lives around.”

The move supports a key goal in Ireland’s Youth Justice Strategy 2021–2027, which aims to tackle early school leaving and promote long-term inclusion through education.

Minister Collins reinforced the value of lifelong learning, saying:

“Further education and training is available in every county in Ireland, and it can take you as far as you want to go — regardless of your past educational experience. From law and childcare to ICT and hairdressing, there’s something for everyone.”

The Further Education, Training and Employment Progression Opportunities for Young People no Longer in the Formal School System Guidance Document can be accessed online on the Youth Justice Strategy 2021 – 2027 website.
