Learning Outcomes

On completion of this Diploma in Irish History, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of Ireland under the Union (1800–1922) and the key political, social and economic forces that shaped the period.
  • Analyse major themes in Irish history, including land reform, governance, nationalism, gender, class conflict and social change.
  • Evaluate historical events from multiple perspectives, including ordinary people and political institutions, using both bottom-up and top-down approaches.
  • Critically assess primary sources, historical texts and case studies relating to nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ireland.
  • Develop independent historical enquiry skills by questioning established narratives and exploring alternative interpretations of Irish history.
  • Explain how the legacy of Ireland under the Union continues to influence Irish identity and society today.
